On June 20, 2019 the NFL gave teams the ability to challenge pass interference calls. Missed pass interference, overly called roughing the passer, and holding calls have caused problems in the NFL for many years. Penalties shouldn’t solely rely on the refs because the refs are humans who miss and make bad calls. This year the league decided coaches can challenge a pass interference call. However, the NFL should not wait for another situation to happen like the one that ended the New Orleans Saints’ season. This was one of the biggest missed calls in NFL history. The New Orleans Saints were marching down the field when Tommylee Lewis was destroyed before getting a chance to catch the ball. This led to the Saints not getting a first down and losing the game. The NFL should also allow teams to challenge other plays. Starting with the constantly bad holding and roughing the passer calls. This season will break the record for penalties called because the NFL adds new safety rules every year. The league must allow coaches to challenge more penalties and non-calls. In no way will this make the league worse. This change will improve the NFL because the coaches/teams will be in control of the game during critical situations, not the refs.
