Fair Lawn’s vibrant community is one that invites and welcomes talents of all kinds. A huge part of that vibrant community is the FLHS Athletics Department. And the past couple of months have been amazing for them.
History is being made as the FLHS Athletic Hall of Fame committee has announced that 10 individuals and two teams have been elected to the FLHS Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2024. This inspiring induction occurs after a six-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the teams elected is the 2011 boys volleyball state championship team, along with two star players: Daniel Nugent (2011) and Oren Zyndorf (2011) who is actually a professional player now. Also joining them in the Hall of Fame are baseball athletes Paul Cingire (2004) and the late Tony Giresi (1967). Some other individual athletes include Valerie Shklover (Girls tennis 2014), Daniel Woodall (Boys hockey 2003), Nicole Sisco Schoeneich (Girls basketball 2009), and Kaitlin Guy Kachonick (Girls basketball, softball and volleyball 2005).
This induction to the FLHS Athletic Hall of Fame is a remarkable one as it marks the beginning of a new category as of 2024: Outstanding Sports Career candidates. This induction is one that honors individuals and coaches who have gone on to achieve success in a sports career after their time at Fair Lawn High School. Coach Norm Schoenig (1969) will be the first-ever inducted in this new category.
However, it does not end here. The FLHS Athletics Hall of Fame Committee also launched a Veterans Subcommittee for the first time, charging it with individuals or teams that last competed a minimum of 40 years ago. Recently, the FLHS Athletic Hall of Fame elected football kicker Bennett Kass (1972) and the state champion 1968 Boys Lacrosse Team as the first-ever inducted members into the Hall of Fame.
There is also good news for the FLHS Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2024. They will be honored on October 5th, 2024 during a full day of induction ceremonies and activities including a brunch, a walk-through of the Hall of Fame gallery, a halftime introduction, and a celebratory culminating dinner.
