Who would have thought we’d see the day when an egg dethroned a Kardashian-Jenner? Well, 2019 has already proven to be a year for the record books. On January 4, 2019, a simple photo of an egg was uploaded to Instagram and began to take the world by storm.
The photo of the egg was posted with the comment, “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this.”
Kylie Jenner held this title on a post announcing her daughter Stormi’s birth, but this past Sunday, January 13, that egg took the spot. The egg has largely surpassed the 18 million likes benchmark and now holds a total of over 47 million likes and continues to amass more by the hour.
Kylie Jenner has since responded to the news by posting a video of herself to Instagram smashing an egg writing, “Take that little egg,” in the comments.
No, you are not mistaken. This is just an egg. There is nothing special about it, no prize inside of it; it is just an egg, yet it has created more news than most people or things ever will. In fact, this egg has probably already spoiled or will quite soon.
Cory Grundon, 15, of Cedar Cliff High School said, “I think the egg is stupid but funny at the same time. It’s funny to think how one small thing, as stupid as it is, can have one goal, as big as this is, and beat it.”
Cedar Cliff High School student Julia Breneman, 17, said, “I believe that the egg symbolizes something more than just a funny joke. The idea of an egg is so simple and basic, and the concept of it receiving more likes is showing that it doesn’t have to be a photo of a celebrity to become big. Likes are meaningless and the idea of so many people liking that picture of an egg is super funny.”
Cedar Cliff junior Reece Helstrom, 16, said, “I think the egg getting as many likes as it did is impressive. I think that it is really cool that something as simple as a picture of an egg could beat Kylie Jenner and get upwards of 40,000,000 likes. But really, is this what is considered a big event in our daily lives? A photo of an egg getting a bunch of likes? With all the buzz surrounding this egg, it’s just astonishing how much people go crazy over something so superficial.”
2019 will forever be remembered as the year all people banded together to help an egg beat Kylie Jenner in a popularity contest, and that says a lot about our society as a whole.
