Let's say you were playing a harmless game of truth or dare and you pick dare. Your dare was to break your best friend's hand with a hammer, would you do it? Would you go as far as telling your deepest, darkest secrets or even cutting off your own tongue? Probably not, but what if it depended on your life?
Everyone has played the game truth or dare at some point in their life. However, after you watch the thriller/horror film Truth or Dare by the producer of Happy Death Day and Get Out, you will never think of the game as merely just a game. This movie follows a group of college friends on their trip to Mexico before they graduate. There Olivia Barron (Lucy Hale) winds up meeting a stranger who calls himself Carter (Landon Liboiron) and they play a simple game of truth or dare in an abandoned Catholic Church. However, Carter later reveals to them that he took advantage of sweet, innocent Olivia so that he can trick her and her friends into playing the game. Olivia and her friends, Markie (Violett Beane), Lucas (Tyler Posey), Penelope (Sophia Taylor Ali), Tyson (Nolan Gerard Funk), Ronnie (Sam Lerner) and Brad (Hayden Szeto) were left confused as Carter quickly explained to them that the game will follow them and they must not refuse to play if they want to survive. They chose to ignore what Carter said and experienced what they considered hallucinations when they returned back home. However, Olivia figured out that the game is actually real when she realized that she was the only one who saw and heard the truth or dare challenge she was given in which she was forced to expose her best friend, Markie. Her assumptions were confirmed when one of their friends, Ronnie died because he did not do the dare he was given. The group of friends struggle to survive as they try to put an end to the haunting game given by an evil spirit who possesses people and ends up making them look like a messed up Snapchat filter. This spirit gains pleasure when seeing others suffer and intends on getting what he wants from those who enter the game. The group of friends discover rules of the game that makes it more difficult to escape the game which represents more of a curse. As the group of friends try to hold onto their lives, they are forced to confront challenges and reveal secrets that can possibly result in death and destruction.
Now, I have to ask...truth or dare? Choose wisely and remember that whatever you do and wherever you go the game will follow you.
