The film “The Disaster Artist” starring James Franco is so bad, that it’s good. Released in December, the movie is based off the book of the same name written by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell. This biographical comedy-drama is a fantastic film that tells the story of the making of the 2003 cult movie “The Room,” starring Tommy Wiseau and Sestero himself. It is regarded as “The greatest worst movie ever made,” writes Sestero in his book. What makes “The Room” so bad that it's good is the fact that there are so many mistakes and oversights, and the acting is so unbelievably bad that it’s hilarious.
Both the book and the movie came about because the making of “The Room” is unlike any other movie production. First, the film was rumored to have had a budget of $6 million, which Wiseau, as writer, producer, director and main star of “The Room,” paid for out of his own pocket. On top of that, he had a billboard put up on Hollywood Boulevard to promote "The Room" for five years at an estimated cost to him of another $300 million, according to Complex.com. To this day nobody knows where Wiseau got all of his money. To add to that mystery, nobody knows definitively what country he was born in, what his actual name is (because he had it legally changed), or how old he is, as this is detailed in Sestero’s book.
“The Room” has developed somewhat of a large cult following, even after almost 15 years of its initial release in 2003. Movie theaters around the country have midnight viewing events where there is extensive audience interaction, such as throwing plastic spoons at the screen whenever a spoon appears on screen because, for whatever reason, all the framed photos in the movie are of spoons.
The structure of storytelling in "The Room" is also unique. There are countless plot lines that are established at one point but are never brought up again. There are characters that don't contribute anything to the plot and scenes that if they were to be cut out of the movie would not change a thing.
Regardless of its many flaws, "The Room" is a great movie. The film is still very enjoyable because of how bad it is. It would not be as successful today if it weren’t the way it is. It may not seem like it, but much passion was put into making the movie, which is what the film "The Disaster Artist" and the book explain. I strongly urge everybody to see both “The Room” and "The Disaster Artist" if they want to have a good time.
