If you find yourself missing the color guard performances now that the marching band season has concluded, then Winter Guard is something to look forward to this winter. The Winter Guard differs from Winter Percussion in that the Percussion just involves the drumline and frontline whereas winter guard is, “a tarp-like percussion that involves a big group of people” according to Coach Cheryl Deal. Winter Guard does not involve any instruments although it does involve flags and rifle dancing.
In order to audition for Winter Guard, the coach will assign a routine consisting of dance, tossing, and doing a flag routine. According to Coach Deal, “winter guard performs to add personality, character, and emotion.” CHS Winter Guard performs a professionally choreographed routine before an audience, typically at competitions with other guards from around the area. They practice two to three times a week. Deal had also mentioned, “The season usually runs until April and we attend three to four competitions.”
Coach Deal says she loves coaching winter guard and she likes how much fun it is with all the kids that join. Coach Deal said “I have always loved working with kids, but I truly have been blessed by being their coach. I love watching them grow year to year and improve their skills. I also tell them that their goal is to improve their own show and skills, don't worry about the other teams. As long as they do their best, that's what is important.”
