With everyone being in quarantine, many people have been watching much more tv than what is normal. Most streaming networks have thousands of series to start, so how does one weed out what will be enjoyable and what would be a waste of time? It is nearly impossible, and you could potentially be sifting through shows for days. So, I’ve decided to sacrifice time with my family, my homework, and my normal binge-watching in order to watch these programs and pass on to you what is a must-see and what is worth ignoring.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the number one tv series on Netflix right now is called Master of None. The show description is as follows: “A comedy following the personal and professional challenges that face a 30-year-old New York actor, whose trials range from the immigrant experience to what pasta he should eat for dinner” (“Best...”). It has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 90% average audience score. Unfortunately, it only has two seasons (“Best…”).
If you are in the mood for a different type of comedy, a popular series on Netflix and Amazon Prime is New Girl (“The 80…”). It is a comfort sitcom about an eccentric teacher who moves to L.A. and ends up living with three men. The show is a Friends-like comedy, and serves as a great pick-me-up series. With its seven seasons, it makes for a great show to binge.
Perhaps you prefer crime shows over all. If that is the case, Mindhunter on Netflix is a must see. The series is based on true events and follows the early days of the FBI’s criminal profiling unit in the late 1970s. Two FBI agents from the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit set out to interview imprisoned serial killers to see if they can understand why they did what they did. They help create a profile for the FBI to catch these kinds of killers. It’s an addictive series that refuses to go down easy or well-worn paths, and instead finds brand new ways to chronicle stories that have been told countless times (“The 80...”).
Another possible favorite is the popular Sci-fi / Fantasy TV series on Netflix The Witcher. Witcher embraces all aspects of fantasy storytelling and gaming. The show’s first season follows three stories: Cavill’s Witcher is a muscle-for-hire monster hunter who begins to question why so many princesses have been turning into creatures; Yennefer of Vengerberg is a powerful sorceress in training who struggles to keep her emotions in check; and princess Ciri is on the run after the sacking of her city, but harbors secrets of her own. For right now, the series only has one season, but it has already been renewed for the second, which is expected to drop in November of 2021 (“The 80...”).
Dramas are another popular genre. One of the most popular Dramas on Netflix is The Crown. The Crown examines the early reign of England’s Queen Elizabeth II. Young Elizabeth, newly married to Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, first lives as a privileged princess before having to transition into the position of Queen. From there, as her grandmother cautions her, there will be two Elizabeths at odds with one another: one who is a young woman with her own hopes and dreams, and one who is a royal, whose life will be full of duty and sacrifice. “But the crown must always win” (“The 80...”).
