With the uncertainty of the COVID-19 outbreak and paranoia surrounding it, many celebrities and public figures have taken to social media in an effort to ease some of the stress and raise awareness of the steps needed to protect ourselves from the virus. Some celebrities have donated money, medical supplies and more to various organizations and hospitals around the world. Miley Cyrus attempted to shed some light on the situation by poking fun that her Hannah Montana hand sanitizer was the only thing to defeat the virus. She also posted a detailed step by step hand washing chart and urged fans to wash their hands and be safe.
25 celebrities including Natalie Portman, Sarah Silverman, Will Ferrell, Gal Gadot and Norah Jones came together to sing snippets of John Lennon’s “Imagine”, as a way of saying that we are all in this together and will overcome this together as well. Kylie Jenner posted a PSA to fans about the importance of self-quarantine and proper handwashing as well as donating 1 million dollars for masks and protective gear. After the NBA canceled all the games for the season, many stadium workers were out of a job. New Orleans Pelicans forward, Zion Williamson, announced that he would cover the salaries of some of the stadium employees. Josh Gad, better known as Olaf from Disney’s Frozen, gave parents what he called “ten minutes of free daycare”, as he live-streamed and read some of his favorite storybooks. Jennifer Garner encouraged fans to use this time to present a talent they might not have had time for before. JJ Watt and his wife, Kealia Ohai, personally donated over 300,000 dollars to Houston Food Bank which provided over one million meals to those currently in need. Lizzo hosted a meditation session on her Instagram to relieve some stress and anxiety.
These celebrities and many more have used their power and influence for good. Whether it be with money and donations or just with a few tips and extra hope, they have proven that we will overcome this global outbreak.
