Elton Hercules John is an english singer, songwriter, pianist and composer. He and his partner, Bernie Taupin, have been writing songs for more than 40 years and have collaborated on more than 30 albums. Elton has sold over 300 million records, making him one of the world’s best-selling music artists.
John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25th, 1947, in Pinner, Middlesex, England. He developed his love for music at an early age and taught himself to play the piano when he was only four. Impressing a lot of people along the way, he won a scholarship to a youth program at the Royal Academy of Music.
Elton had a difficult relationship with his father, Stanley Dwight, a member of the Royal Air Force. His parents got divorced when he was a teenager, and he and his father often fought over his career choices. John wanted to pursue a career in the Rock and Roll, and much to his father's dismay, dropped out of school at the age of 17 to do so.
In 1967 John answered a songwriting ad for Liberty Records. He was hired and paired up with lyricist Bernie Taupin. He got his first big break with his 1969 album Empty Sky. While that record failed to catch on, his self-titled effort featured his first major hit, Your Song. More hits followed including Crocodile Rock, Bennie and the Jets, and Island Girl.
Elton was one of the top acts in the 1970's. Known for his “over the top” stage gear and sunglasses, he wanted to give his audiences something to look at. In an interview with john he stated,” i wasn’t a sex symbol like Bowie, Marc Bolan, or Freddie Mercury, so i dressed more on the humorous side, because if i was going to be stuck at the piano for two hours, i was going to make people look at me.”
In 1976 John released “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” featuring Kiki Dee. Soon after he decided to take some time away from making music to focus on his soccer team that he co-owned in England. Around the same time he openly announced that he was bisexual, ( he later came out as a gay man ). He was attacked and made fun of but eventually the ridicule died down. He then returned to the music scene in 1979 with his album A Single Man.
On May 31st, 2019 a biopic telling the story of John's life hit theatres. Rocketman made about 25 million dollars in box offices within the durance of it being in theatres. The movie opens up with elton, played by Taron Egerton, sitting in an AA meeting and he makes this open statement,” My name is Elton Hercules John, and im an alcoholic, and a sex addict, and a cocaine addict, and a belemic, i’m also a shopaholic who has problems with weed, perscription drugs, and anger management.”
Throughout his life elton has had many struggles, but he didn’t let that stop him from entertaining audiences worldwide which is what he valued most about being a performer. Elton is still to this day one of the most electric entertainers in all of music history and his music will carry on for future generations to enjoy.
