Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro claimed to have defeated what he called a military coup attempt by the opposition leader, Juan Guaidó. Dozens of National Guardsmen sided with the opposition in clashes on Tuesday that injured more than 100 people. But in a defiant TV address, President Maduro said Guaidó had failed to turn the military against him. Guaidó insists that Maduro has lost control of the armed forces, and that a peaceful transition is at hand. The opposition leader appealed for his supporters to take to the streets of Venezuela again on Wednesday.

Officials say US Special Counsel Robert Mueller wrote to the country's top lawyer to express frustration at his summary of the Russia investigation. He wrote to Attorney General William Barr in March to complain about a lack of "context" in his four-page summary of the long-awaited report. Barr's summary said there was no collusion between Russia and President Donald Trump's election campaign. But the report did not exonerate the president of obstruction of justice.
Today in history, James Whittaker of Redmond, Washington, became the first American to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. Located in the central Himalayas on the border of China and Nepal, Everest stands 29,028 feet above sea level. Called Chomolungma, or “Mother Goddess of the Land,” by the Tibetans, the English named the mountain after Sir George Everest, an early 19th-century British surveyor of the Himalayas. In May 1953, climber and explorer Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal made the first successful climb of the peak.
