Valery Bykovsky, who was the 11th person to venture into space and who held the unbroken record for the longest solo spaceflight, has died aged 84. Bykovsky first flew aboard a Vostok 5 spacecraft in June 1963 and would go on to take part in two more USSR missions. His record-setting solo flight saw him spend five days in space aboard the Vostok 5, orbiting the Earth 82 times. Bykovsky was among the first group of USSR cosmonauts alongside Yuri Gagarin, the first person to travel to space.
In other news,
Researchers say a fungus that kills amphibians is responsible for the biggest documented loss of nature from a single disease. Better biosecurity and wildlife trade restrictions are urgently needed to prevent any more extinctions. The disease, chytridiomycosis, has caused mass die-offs in frogs, toads and salamanders over the past 50 years, including extinctions of 90 species, according to a review of evidence. It has spread to over 60 countries. Australia, Central America and South America are particularly hard hit.
Competing to secure the new pet’s allegiance, members of the Thomas family were reportedly locked in a heated bidding war Thursday as each tried to convince their cat, Cookie, to sleep in their bed. “So far, I’ve provided the most perks—sneaking him extra scoops of food, offering him handfuls of catnip, and giving him nice pats all day,” said Avery Thomas, 11, who explained that she had begun granting the cat additional incentives, like jingly toys and tuna treats, after noticing her younger brother was leaving his electric blanket on for the 16-month-old American shorthair despite it being warm inside. “Unfortunately, my sister may have made a hard-to-beat offer by waking up an hour early every morning just to feed him. It won’t be easy to top that, though I’m not afraid to bring out the big guns and aim the laser pointer at my bed if that’s what it comes to.” At press time, sources confirmed the cat had decided to sleep in a laundry hamper full of dirty towels
On this day in history Mr. Jeremy Bischoff was born today!! Happy birthday!!
