Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day. In honor of this, let’s take a look at how far women’s rights have come.
Let’s start our journey through time in 1789 when Abigail Adams told her husband to “Remember the ladies” in the new constitution. This was an iconic moment that raised more attention to the need for more women’s rights. In 1848, the first convention was held to discuss women’s rights. Then in 1849, Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman licensed physician in the United States. Harriet Tubman made her mark by joining the underground railroad in 1850. In 1869, Wyoming was the first to grant women the right to vote in all their territories. On June 4, 1919, the Senate passes the 19th Amendment which was drafted by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and first introduced in 1878. In 1932, Amelia Earhart makes the first transcontinental flight by a woman. In 1964, the Civil Rights Act outlaws sex discrimination. Finally in 2007, Hillary Clinton was the first woman to announce her candidacy for president.
Ladies, today is our day. Let’s be thankful for those who fought for our rights, and let’s look forward to how far we can go. Happy International Women’s Day!
