Columbus Wrestlers Claim State Runner-Up Title

On January 19th, the discoverer wrestlers competed at UNK. They beat Central, WY 59-12. They also lost to Kearney after putting up a tough fight.
On Jan. 24, the wrestlers took down Lincoln North Star 67-12. The whole team pulled off a win against their opponent at this dual except Justin Gaston. Lincoln’s other 6 points came from us not having a wrestler at 285 lbs.
On Jan. 26, the wrestlers went to the Norfolk invite. Tanner Kobza, Carter Kucera, Carson Zwingman, Kasten Grape, Anthony DeAnda, Blayze Standley, and Avery Mcmeekin all won their 1st place match.
Feb. 2 was the NSAA State Dual Championships. Columbus won over Papillion LaVista 42-28. Grand Island beat the Discoverers 30-29, and Millard South took home a win with a score of 39-21.
State wrestling was held Feb. 14-16 in Omaha at the CHI Health Center. By the end of Thursday, the team as a whole was in first place. By the end of Friday, the team was in fifth place. By the end of the finals on Saturday, the team placed second overall with a score of 157.5, claiming the title of state runner ups behind Millard South with 166.5! Great job wrestlers! Congratulations to junior Kasten Grape for getting first place in his weight class in the state! Senior Avery Mcmeekin also placed second in his weight class. Senior Carter Kucera placed third. Junior Anthony DeAnda places fourth Sophomores Blayze Standley and Tanner Kobza both medaled at state with fourth place in their weight category. Senior Carson Zwingman and junior Clay Cerny both placed fifth in their weight class.
