Clara Brown was born on January 1st, 1800, in Independence, Missouri, into the immoral and unjust system of slavery. She spent the first 56 years of her live in complete and total servitude. She died on October 23rd, 1885, a wealthy and prosperous woman, despite being born a slave. Her story is one of American greatness, even if it started as one of American tragedy. Clara Brown's life and accomplishments show how despite being born into an unjust and morally wrong system like slavery, African Americans could incredible things through hard work and believe in themselves. Her story is a relatively unknown one, but it's one that captures the true spirit of Black History Month.
