THIS I BELIEVE

I believe in Santa.  Most 15 year olds can’t say that at this age.  But wait, before you jump to any conclusions. I don’t still believe that a fat man climbs down my chimney and eats my cookies.  I believe in the idea; the symbol that Santa Claus stands for. Every Christmas morning, a child wakes up from their bed and hastily runs to see if their cookies are eaten and see if there are any presents under the tree.  If you believed in Santa Claus as a kid, you know what feeling I’m talking about. This feeling is like no other. It’s a sense of excitement as if nothing else in the world matters. It is pure happiness. This is why I believe in Santa Claus.  Although he may not be real, everyone needs that Santa Claus feeling in their life.

First of all, who is Santa Claus?  According to most media, he is known as Saint Nicholas.  He became a saint because of his kindness and generosity when he delivered gifts to children ages ago.  Throughout the years, he continued to deliver presents to nice children everywhere across the globe. To summarise, Santa is a very generous man.  All that Santa cares about is giving. Afterall, Christmas is the season of giving. With this in mind, I believe in the idea of Santa because he symbolises the gift of giving.  Nowadays, most people like to take and not give. Entrepreneurs around the world are greedy and only care about money, leaders are selfish, and even a lot of teenagers just want things.  Santa Claus shows us that we should care more about giving rather than getting.

When Saint Nick comes to town,  all the children try to be on their best behavior.  “He’s checking his list, he’s checking it twice. He’s gonna find out who’s naughty and nice.”  It is believed that if a child is naughty Santa will deliver coal in their stockings rather than presents.  I always remember when it was the holiday season I would be on my best behavior. I would think about saying something mean to my brother, but then remember Santa is watching.  This would stop me from saying anything. What if everyone in the world thought more like this? If the idea of Santa Claus can keep kids on their best behavior, why can’t it do the same for adults.  That is why I believe in Santa. He symbolises a better version of yourself. If not only kids thought about their actions before they acted on them, the world would be a better place. I know it’s a long stretch because adults don’t believe in Santa but this idea would go a long way.  Rather than doing what you want all the time, think about your actions and whether that makes you naughty or nice.

As said by Andy Williams, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”  Everyone can agree with this statement. There is something about the Christmas season that makes it the best time.  Everyone is jollier and brighter in spirits. Think of a time when you were in a really bad mood. Or maybe having a really hard time.  Most likely it wasn’t happening during Christmas. When Christmas is over, that feeling fades away a little. What if this feeling was around all year.  Obviously we can’t have Christmas more than once, but what if we could hold onto this feeling of joy for a longer period of time? Christmas time fills the air with happiness.  If the air was always filled with happiness maybe there would be less conflict. Santa Claus helps portray the joy of Christmas. Children can’t wait and parents are happy to see their kids excitement. To summarise, Christmas shows the best side of everyone’s personality.

I believe in Santa. I believe in the ideas that this character present. Generosity, kindness, and spirit are all very important. If we all tried to better ourselves to be more like Santa Claus, (and I’m not talking about climbing down chimneys) then maybe we could be better.
