Humor
When the word humor is said, people generally think of it as a characteristic of a person, joke, or phrase. Almost everyday we are in humorous situations or one of our friends tell a joke with humor in it. The problem with humor is it can be used in bad ways and bad situations. People think if used in the correct way there is nothing wrong with it, but someone always seems to find a way to say humor can be offensive.
Most people have a humor side to them or know of someone full of humor. This can be a great characteristic, but also a bad one at times. We all have that one friend that never fails to crack a hilarious joke that makes everyone laugh and smile. Sometimes people that are full of humor take it too far, they might say something or do something that to them is funny, but to others it can be offensive and rude. For example if someone makes fun of another person surrounding people may think its funny, but what about the person that was made fun of they may feel hurt or offended and it is never funny to make someone feel bad.
There is also something called crude humor. We see this kind of humor on television, especially the show "Family Guy." For example the show will make jokes about the tragic events on September eleventh two-thousand and one. In my opinion and many others, any joke about a tragic event like that is very distasteful. I don't imagine many people would like a tragic event to be made fun of when one of their loved ones died in it. There are also many other shows that will make racist jokes and in a time like now racism is the last thing we need to be taken as a joke. When racism is joked about on television others then think it's okay to be racist or are greatly offended by it.
Humor is also a great thing to have in our lives. We all have our bad days and sometimes a little humor is all we need to feel better, even if just for a moment. In my families case humor is part of our DNA. We have a great ability to even make the saddest times in our lives a little better with added humor. For example when my grandfather died a few years ago it was a very sad time for our family. He was the funniest person we all knew. We knew he wanted to go out with a bang or at least not have his service full of tears. So this meant we made sure his service was just full of funny jokes and stories about him. If you were an onlooker you would think why is this crazy family laughing hysterically for most of his wake. This is just how some people cope, they can reflect back and be sad which is just fine or they can add a little humor and celebrate a sad moment with laughter and love.
That is why I choose humor it's just a part of my life and when used right it can make everyone's lives just a bit better. We as people have to be careful and mindful of others when using humor, think to yourself could this offend someone, could this make someone feel bad about themselves? If it can hurt someone be mindful and maybe not say your joke. No matter what someone will always find something wrong with a harmless joke, that's just going to be part of life we cannot please everyone. So maybe next time you see someone down on their luck one small joke could make their day just a tad bit better and that can mean a lot.
