Whether you adore them, or strongly dislike them, pickles are an American staple. Pickles appear on hamburgers, hot dogs, and several other foods served at cookouts, such as those on the 4th of July. Because pickles are so important, why not celebrate them? Now you can. November 14th, National Pickle Day, allows you to celebrate the beloved food.
The creation of National Pickle Day dates back to 1949, where an organization, known as the Pickle Packers Association, advocated for the pickle to have its' own holiday. For 70 years, this food has been observed every November 14th.
Every year, Americans consume 5,200,000 pounds of pickles. That's equal to the weight of 1,000 SUVs! But it's not just Americans who adore the snack. The enjoyment of the pickle dates back to 2030 B.C., when to insure the preservation of cucumbers, Indian traders accidentally pickled the cucumbers. Cleopatra believed that pickles could keep her young and beautiful. We should be glad that the ancient civilizations kept the pickle alive!
So, on November 14th, celebrate National Pickle Day by popping open a jar, and feasting away.
