Most people know that Veterans Day falls on November 11th, but many citizens don't know why.
Picture this: November 1918, World War 1 is coming to an end. It is well known that the Allied Nations are going to beat the Central Powers. In order to try to create peace and end the gruesome war, U.S. president Woodrow Wilson and other world leaders signed an agreement, known as the Armistice, that stated that there would be a ceasefire at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day in the eleventh month: 11/11 at 11:00am.
To remember this significant event, the U.S. government declared November 11th Armistice Day; however, because of the multitude of wars in the 20th century, the government realized that we need a day to honor all servicemen. So, in 1954, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, and it's been that way ever since.
Now you know the history of Veterans Day. Use this important day to thank a vet and reflect on all the lives that lived through this rich history.
