South Korean president Moon Jae-in reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has agreed to shut one of the country's main missile testing and launch sites. After meeting in Pyongyang, the two leaders "agreed on a way to achieve denuclearization." The agreement was described by Mr Kim as a "leap forward" toward military peace on the peninsula.
Chief negotiator Michel Barnier states that the EU is "ready to improve" its offer on the Irish border. The UK and EU both want to avoid a hard border, meaning any physical infrastructure like cameras or guard posts, but can't agree on how. The EU's negotiator has now shifted tone on his "backstop" proposal to avoid a hard border.
On this day in 1850, Congress abolished the slave trade in the District of Columbia as part of a legislative package known as the Compromise of 1850. It consists of five laws passed to seek a compromise and avert a crisis between North and South.
In 1893 New Zealand becomes the first country in the world to grant national voting rights to women. The bill was the outcome of years of women often traveling considerable distances to hear lectures and speeches, pass resolutions, and sign petitions.
