Mamoudou Gassama, a Malian migrant, made the newspaper yesterday after he scaled an apartment building from the outside, balcony to balcony, to rescue a child dangling from the edge of one on the fourth floor. Gassama has met with French President Emmanuel Macron, who has offered Gassama citizenship, as well as a medal of courage, and a position in the Parisian fire service. It is likely he will accept.
Additionally, the search for the lost Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 was officially called off today. Although said to have crashed somewhere a few hundred miles off the coast of Australia, pieces of debris identified as part of MH 370 have been found as far away from that location as Madagascar and the Eastern coast of Africa. This means that the plane most likely crashed into the ocean and broke apart upon impact, making the likelihood of finding an intact fuselage at the bottom of the sea floor highly unlikely and nearly impossible.
On this day in 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzig Norgay became the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest. News broke out around the world, however, on June 2nd, the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. She hailed the successful British exploration as a good omen for the future of the country.
