Approximately 76 were killed and dozens more were wounded yesterday in India by severe dust storms that struck the states of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Most of the victims were killed in their sleep when intense winds and bursts of lightning caused several buildings, including houses and apartment buildings, to collapse. Although dust storms of a large magnitude are common for this season in India, the death toll and level of destruction are abnormally high compared to previous years, something that many believe could indicate changing weather patterns in southern Asia.
On this day in 1933, musician James Brown was born. In a career that spanned over fifty years, he paved the way for the development of several different music genres. In addition to being the self-proclaimed “Hardest Working Man in Show Business”, Brown also was a major voice when it came to advocating for both education and Civil Rights. He released the song “Don’t Be a Dropout”, which led him to meeting President Lyndon B. Johnson, who said Brown was a positive role model to the youth. James Brown passed away in 2006.
