Alias Grace

The meaning of the novel Alias Grace was not meant to be clear. The novel was written from the cruel and naked truths of history. The truths that meant a coherent solution was never reached. The modern world expects a single and clear outcome, but this novel confronts such assumption. Alias Grace shows the reader that it's alright to lack an answer. Instead, the answer can be interpreted in several meanings, all which satisfy the claim.

The document Natural Born Quilter elucidates the underlying meaning in the novel as stated above. The document explains that a single verdict is never a path in the novel. Instead,

What unfolds ultimately is that no one will ever know Grace. Writers, doctors, and lawyers can take aspects of her and exploit them to support their theories, but Atwood challenges the reader to not take sides, to not simply work toward a guilty or not-guilty verdict. (Natural Born Quilter, Margaret Atwood Discusses Murder, Quilting, and her New Novel, Alias Grace)

In simple terms, Atwood wanted to show readers the numerous possibilities of an outcome. Grace took the name of a murder, an innocent bystander, and a hidden character whose personality is not evidently known. By adhering to these multiple characteristics, Atwood is able to demonstrate the multiple faces of a crime. To a stranger, Grace may seem innocent and pure. But to the face of justice, Grace is a convict and a irrational lunatic.

The modern world consists of binary outcomes: right or wrong. However, There is a much greater possibility in between. Right and wrong are merely theoretical values. As demonstrated throughout history, a cluster of variation exists between the two values. This concept is very much overlooked today, and is correctly demonstrated in Margaret Atwood’s novel, Alias Grace, as explained by the document, Natural Born Quilter.
