Russia held its presidential elections yesterday. The incumbent, President Vladimir Putin, was re-elected to the office of the presidency by landslide elections, as was expected. The main opposition candidate, Alexei Navalny, was barred from the election by the Putin administration for embezzlement claims. Several independent electoral monitoring organizations have stated that the elections were subject to dodgy and illegal tactics used by the Putin administration, such as forcing some groups of people to vote, excluding other groups from voting, stuffing ballot boxes, and limiting NGO observation of polling places.
On this day in 1953, the Academy Awards were broadcasted on live TV for the first time. The Oscars had been a prestigious award since their first ceremony in 1929, and by the second awards ceremony it had been covered by a live radio broadcast, but now Americans could sit in the comfort of their homes and actually watch Hollywood’s biggest night themselves. Bob Hope was the master of ceremonies, and an actor named Fredric March presented the awards. Today, the Oscars is the most anticipated night in Hollywood and full of glitz and glam.

The purpose of this trip is to give interested students and their parents an opportunity to see the Academy first hand, learn about the application/appointment process, and meet with local area high school graduates who are presently midshipmen at the Academy. If you have an interest in serving your country as an officer, this is a great way to attend college for free, as a degree from the Academy is estimated to be worth approximately $400,000 for the four year program.
