On January 14th, 2018, a baby boy was abandoned in a bathroom at the Tucson International Airport. Left with him, was a note from his mother. It read:
“Please help me
“My mom had no idea she was pregnant. She is unable and unfit to take care of me. Please get me to authorities so they can find a good home
“I just want what is best for him and that is not me. Please. I’m sorry”
Since then, officials have found security camera footage showing a young woman they believe to be the boy’s mother, carrying some sort of object wrapped in a blanket. The woman walks with what many are calling an “awkward gait,” leading officials to deduce that she actually gave birth in an airport bathroom near the terminals. She then walked to a different bathroom near baggage claim, where she abandoned it.
Officials are now thoroughly searching for the young woman shown in the security camera footage. Though Arizona is a “safe haven” state, meaning that parents can abandon their child in designated areas if they see themselves to be unfit to care for their child, the airport is not a designated area. This means that this woman could potentially face criminal charges for her actions.
