The Farmington Knights boys basketball season has been a rollercoaster with a good amount of twist and turns. Halfway through the season, the Knights sit at 8-7, and 1-1 in Conference play.
The Knights opened their season the way they have the past seven years, with the St. John Vianney Invitational in St. Louis, Missouri. To open the year, Farmington took on Ladue High School, followed by Hazelwood Central in their pool play matchups. The Varsity boys lost a tough opener to Ladue by a basket, at 46-44, and took a beating the next day against State Ranked Hazelwood, losing by 22. Farmington then lost the third place game against Vianney to fall to 0-3 for the first time since 2013.
Following the tournament, the Knights picked up their first win of the season against Hazelwood West in the Sullivan Shootout, and followed up with a tough loss at State Ranked Cape Central by a point, with a final score of 55-54.
The biggest part of the Knights season came in the Annual Central Christmas Tournament from Dec. 26-30, and proved to be a world wind for Farmington. The team opened the tournament with back to back 30+ point wins over Fredricktown and South Iron, and followed it up with a thrilling one point victory over arch rival North County after Guard Tyler Herzog knocked down a game winning free throw with 2.3 seconds left. Farmington, playing without Center Cole Laurence, lost a hard fought championship game against Hillsboro the next night, but showed loads of promise and exceeded expectations.
Since the new year, Farmington has wins against Poplar Bluff and Desoto, but followed up with back to back losses to North County and top Ranked Sikeston in the past week. Farmington travels to Park Hills Central and Jackson in the next 10 days, proving that the road ahead is no easier.
