The KYW Newstudies Program was an immersive broadcast journalism program hosted for students all around the Philadelphia area. Recommended by their teachers, this program gave students an opportunity to get a hands-on experience with broadcast journalism.
The four-week program consisted of presentations for the students from various people in the business. The lineup included KYW’s own Kristen Johanson, CBS3’s Jan Carabeo, students from Temple’s Klein College of Media and Communication, Paul Gluck from Temple TV, Lu-Ann Cahn, sports radio hosts like Spike Eskin, social media newsroom experts such as Melony Roy, and many more incredible speakers.
The students also had the chance to work in small groups with multiple staff members from the radio station. These professionals helped the students create their radio pieces. These radio pieces were aired on KYW Newsradio’s AM radio station. They were also uploaded to iTunes.
Senior Kevin Dang from Egg Harbor Township High School had nothing but praise for Newstudies. “This program really opened my eyes to new possibilities for my future,” he said.
After the radio pieces were completed, the students were recognized at graduation ceremony for completing the program. Each participant earned a certificate of completion, and some were selected to receive additional awards. . Many of the program’s teachers spoke at the event. Michael Smerconish gave a closing speech at the end of the ceremony.
This program gave the students a new set of skills to take back to their respective schools. It also opened many doors and connections for their future.
