This might be the weirdest start to a basketball season the Leemen have ever had; because of football, the team is two weeks behind in preparations, add that the head coach Mr. Hatcher was absent and it made for what could have been a disaster. No such luck for Wilson Memorial High School, the Leemen showed no signs of lack of focus as they cruised to a 35 point victory. Assistant coach Tyrelle Mickens was in charge last night, making his first head coaching appearance, Mickens had this to say on twitter before the game “Trying my best not to throw up right now. I’m excited though.” Coach had plenty to be excited about on his debut. Before the game Tyrelle reminded the Leemen of the former Leemen suiting up against them, Chance Church,Wilson head coach Hartman, and Greg Woodard. Former Lee High superstar Darius George was on facetime for the whole pregame talk, although his college career is busy right now you could tell how much he wanted to be with his teammates. Treyven West showed off to George his new jersey which is numbered 2, just like Darius. I caught up with one of Lee’s newest players, Zay Brown, to ask him how he felt playing against his former team. “It’s not different, I treat every game like it’s the last; I have no feelings, I’m going to go out there and give 100%” After the impressive win over Wilson it’s safe to say everyone gave 100%. Jarvis ended with 28 and Jayden with 14 as expected by the two stars, perhaps the most surprising showing was senior Everette Castle with 15. Everette gave the team a great post option on offense the whole game, he looked comfortable receiving the ball under the basket. Castle credited his teammates for finding him and called the game a team effort. With 13 Leemen scoring under a more loose rotation, the whole team had a part in this one. The first quarter the Leemen came out on a roll scoring 15 points while Wilson only scored 8. The second half the Hornets played great offense and while the Leemen scored they let the Hornets end the half with a 10-0 run. Tyrelle was disappointed by the lack of effort on the defensive end, the players must have taken what he said to heart, late in the third Lee went on a 17-0 run. The fourth quarter was all Lee’s as the scored 27 points, giving them a 35 point victory. The Hornets had no answer for Jarvis Vaughn who picked up right where he left off from last season, he controlled the game with his presence in the paint picking up 13 rebounds and dozens of layups (including two monster slams). Woodard and Welch of Wilson combined for 33 points on the night. Blaize Velvin came with his usual insane intensity while also having time for amazing dribbles and flashy passes, he also managed to grab 4 boards. The bench ended with 23 points led by Arian Brown and Isaiah Elliston. The Junior Varsity also got into the act with an impressive inaugural win. The Leemen will travel to Luray High School Monday night for their next game.
