South Salem’s Varsity swim teams kicked off their 2017-18 season with a 133-28 win for the boys and a 120-36 win for the girls against McKay. This year there are 80 athletes on the boys and girls team combined. With such a large team, the Saxons are hoping to continue out swimming their opponents. Over the years, South’s toughest competitor has been McMinnville,
“Last year we were really close to mcminnville, both boys and girls, last year. This year I think we have a really good chance, we have a lot of depth on the team.” Scott Ludford ‘18 said.
South competed against Sprague High School on Dec. 7. At the meet the Saxons beat the Olympians by 160 points with a 242-82 victory. Some individual winners for the girls included Anna Despain ‘18, Madeline Stearns ‘18, and Victoria Privalova ‘19. Tyler Cook ‘18 had his season debut for the Saxon boys and won both the 200 and the 50 Free event.
“We have a lot of freshmen that swim for club teams and they’re just going to continue to get faster,” Brenna Kelly ‘18 said.
South has begun their season with two wins and hope to continue the streak into districts. The Saxons are relying on returning swimmers and their depth as a team to carry them to more victories throughout the season.
