The holiday season is upon us! People shop for their family and friends and spend their hard earned money on each other. However, in the hustle and bustle people tend to forget why we celebrate the holiday season. Northern High School’s student body was asked whether they would prefer to receive one gift with a lot of meaning or a bunch of gifts with no meaning. The results were more than favoring one side over the other.
Out of the 512 students who responded to the survey, only 88 said they would prefer to get multiple gifts with no meaning. They made comments such as, “I love tons of stuff I don’t need,” “If I get it for Christmas, I don’t have to buy it myself,” and “There is no such thing as a gift with no meaning.” However, the school resounded with comments as to why they would rather get one gift with a lot of meaning. Out of the same 512 students surveyed, 424 of them responded that one gift with meaning is better than multiple gifts with no meaning. When asked why, many of these students responded, “Quality over quantity,” “I want to feel like someone cares, so one gift with meaning means they care about me and more effort into choosing it,” and “It’s the thought that counts.”
So, while people go out shopping for toys and gifts to give to their friends and family, it is easy to forget the true meaning of the holidays. Just remember that this time of year is about more than just gifts.
Keep spreading that true meaning and have a happy holiday!
