On Thursday, October 26, the Lee High School student body participated in a biannual blood drive facilitated by the Virginia Blood Services. During the five hour period, 31 different students above the age of 16 were able to donate blood. With these donations, the lives of nearly 100 people throughout Augusta County and Charlottesville can be saved. High school blood drives are excellent opportunities for students to help out in their community. Medical facilities need blood in order to successfully perform organ transplants, transfusions, and other lifesaving procedures.
Trey Wright, a high school senior and veteran to the blood-giving process, decided to participate in the Lee Blood Drive for his second year in a row. “I just wanted to do something to help people.” says Trey, “I donated blood last year, and I saw no reason to not participate again this year.” With Trey’s donation alone, around three Virginians of the same blood type will be able to receive the treatments they need. According to Virginia Blood Services, the most common blood type among those who donated was O+. The students and faculty of Lee High School hope to have another successful blood drive in the Spring.
