With a record of 3-4, the South Salem Saxons are currently 27 in the OSAA state rankings and 6 in the Greater Valley Conference. With two games left in league play the Saxons are hoping to improve their ranking going into the state playoffs.
Though the Saxons did not start their season the way they had hoped, the team as a whole has faced adversity throughout their season. With some key players, including quarterback Elijah Enomoto-Haole ‘19 and wide receiver/running back Collin Vogt ‘18, out four weeks at a time with injuries and illness the Saxons have had to improvise. Vogt returned and played quarterback for the Saxon’s first win of the season in the game against McMinnville on Sept. 29.
The Saxons had a win against North in the final battle for the Mayor’s cup on Oct. 6. With North moving to 5A next year, the Saxons had one last chance to take the cup back, leaving the field with a 24-14 win and the Mayor’s cup.
“It’s great to be back on the field with my team and my family,” said Enomoto-Haole after his return on Oct. 6.
This past week on October 12, South played their homecoming game against McKay. South started the game with two touchdowns in the first quarter, leaving the score at 21-0 at halftime. The Saxons walked off the field with a 33-14 victory against the Scots.
Tonight, October 20, the Saxons will face the Titans at West and the Titans are currently ranked 9 in state and 1 in the conference.
