Have you ever woken up and thought “Gee, I wonder what it’d be like to have my country nuked?” Have you ever just thought “Golly gee willikers, I SURE don’t want my spouse to die and my son to get kidnapped.”
Well, Fallout 4 is here to provide all your emotionally-tormenting needs!!
Fallout 4 is another installment in the Fallout series, open-world games set in a post apocalyptic universe made by Bethesda Studios. The whole gist of the game is that you are a mother/father who was alive on the day America was bombed (which is a first in the series, every other character was born into the pre-war universe as is). In a hurry, you and your spouse and infant son flee to shelter in these vaults that the government made in case of nuclear annihilation. However, the vaults were also built for experimentation purposes as well. Everyone in the Vault (Vault 111) gets cryogenically frozen and you are forced to watch as some thugs break in and steal your son from your spouse, before they shoot your wife/husband dead. In a rage, your player has to adjust to the harshness of the outside world in order to save their son.
While I do like the story of Fallout 4, some complaints that I heard were that the game forces you into marriage and a family. No other game in the series does this, so some people had to disconnect themselves from the image of their family in order to play the game their way. And because this is a story about a parent saving their child (at least it starts that way), some players thought it would be unfitting to play as an evil character. I usually play Fallout games evilly, so this also affected me too. So, in short….THE FORCED GOODNESS IN THIS GAME POISONED MY WATER SUPPLY, BURNED MY CROPS AND DELIVERED A PLAGUE ONTO MY HOUSE.
Although many others and I don’t consider this game to be best in the series, it definitely makes up for the graphics that the other games lack. Granted, it is a post-apocalyptic game, so don’t expect vivid greens and blues for the color scheme. But, because my character was frozen for most of the devastation outside the Vault, she automatically looks better than every single character she meets. Not that I’m complaining or nothin’ ;)
One aspect of the game that they really improved on was the companions that can follow you around the wasteland. I found myself getting emotionally connected with each one, solely because they all have distinct personalities. They all have differing opinions on the things you do and some even have little quests you can do with them to boast their affinity. I really liked Fallout 4, but it could’ve been a lot better. The story was good, but I didn’t like all the settlements I had to build (mainly because mine looked like crap).
Overall, it’s a pretty good game. I recommend this game to anyone, mainly people who like open world games and RPG’s. Fallout is probably my favorite video game series of all time.
