Local Students Aid Harvey Victims
Victor Gaines, Isaiah Knopp - Grade 11
Hurricane Harvey has been a national catastrophe, with every part of the country affected in some way or another. So it makes sense that every part of the nation should participate in the recovery effort. Robert E. Lee High School has been doing their part by participating in the Heart of Texas School Supply Drive. This is a national effort to help Texas schools affected by Harvey by donating school supplies. Since the 22nd of August, more than 74 binders, 200 backpacks, 300 notebooks, and thousands of pens, pencils and markers have been donated for Waller High School, a school located 30 mins northwest of Houston. In Waller High School over fifty percent of the high school’s population speak English as a second language. In addition, Waller High School is a title one school, meaning that a large number of the students come from low-income families. Our contribution and service towards those affected by the disaster is vital to the recovery of this community.
“You can change your part of the world,” states George Laase, a teacher, coach, and the sponsor for the supply drive at Robert E. Lee High School. “We may be different on the outside, but we are all the same on the inside, ” declares Coach Laase, reiterating the necessity for community service in a time like this. Lee High School has taken the opportunity to make a difference in the world around us by changing the corner of our street. We are here to stand together in times of need and hardship for those who need it more.
