Homecoming week is a very special week at Lee High, from the spirit days to the homecoming football game. Although it is a fun, eventful week full of spirit, at the end of the week students complete community service projects. Some of the projects include helping clean up at Thornrose Cemetery, playing bingo with residents from the Legacy at King’s Daughters retirement homes, helping out at the SPCA and local Elementary schools, fundraising for schools in Texas, making blankets for women’s homeless shelters. In Mrs. Lori Swortzel words, “community service is important to Lee High because the students help represent the community in a positive way and learn ownership while doing so.”
Doing community service in high school helps get more students involved and creates a good image for younger students to look up to. “My favorite place to go for community service would have to be the retirement homes because everyone is so appreciative of our company. I always have a great time there,” said Mrs. Swortzel, one of two assistant principals of Robert E. Lee. Some students such as Michael Bryant, chose to use their community service hours to help clean up the school. “ I had a really good time cleaning with my peers. It taught me responsibility and brought me closer to my school,” Michael added.
