Is It Fair To Let Home School or Cyber School Students on Public School Sport Teams?
This has been a topic we’ve been talking about in English class; we’ve had discussions about it, but maybe it’s time to take this outside of school and get more opinions.
This has been an ongoing issue, and it’s something you really need to think about personally. If you personally were Home schooled or Cybered and you wanted to play sports and they declined you, would you understand why, or would you fight for the right to be able to?
Students who are in favor of Home school and Cyber school kids playing on sports teams have said that it is fair for them to be included because students have to pay school taxes since they still live in the school district. Also some schools have Cyber and Home school programs so if you’re still involved in the school why shouldn’t you be allowed to do clubs and sports? Also a good thing to think about is these students are home all that time to do school work. It’d be good and healthy for them to get out, especially when it’s sports or school clubs. There is a law in place that students are allowed to but it’s always interesting to hear students' differing opinions about it.
People who are not in favor of Home school and Cyber school kids playing on sport teams have said it’s unfair because to be in sports you can only fail one class, and since Cyber and Home school is different than public school, their grading scale can be different, so where you have a failing grade, the students who are Cyber or Home schooled could be just passing. Plus, some suggest that the work is easier when you’re Cyber and Home Schooled than it is in traditional school because teachers have less students and can work one on one when needed unlike in school where you have 20+ in a classroom and may not get the individualized assistance that would benefit you. And on top of that, some Cybered and Home school kids don’t have to take Keystones or PSSA's.
Even though a lot of us have very different opinions, this is a debate we need to take in consideration and talk about. Maybe things will change. Maybe nothing will change. Either way, students have opinions. It’s a good topic to talk more about.
