Doom (2016) is the reboot of the critically acclaimed game Doom (1993). Doom is a first-person shooter video game developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. You play as the unnamed protagonist, or as he is known by fans of the series, “Doomguy.” He fights through the hordes of hell that have been released by the Union Aerospace Corporation on a future-set colonized planet Mars. The gameplay of this iteration of the series is faster than ever before with more open-ended levels, which moved away from the slower survival horror aspect of the last game. With the release of a new game in the franchise, comes new changes to the formula, like the inclusion of character upgrades and a more traversable environment.
Doom was first announced as Doom 4 in 2008, but the game underwent many changes in which it became the reboot we have today. The original vision for the game was more of a “Call of Doom” idea, but became a more heavily inspired rock-and-roll aesthetic. The closed beta for Doom was given as a pre-order bonus for Wolfenstein: The New Order, which opened to less than stellar reviews. The developers took the information that they got from the players of the closed beta to heart and revamped the game into a beautiful concoction of trials and tribulations.
The music of this game is an amazing aspect, composed by Mick Gordon and contributed to by Ben F. Carney, Chris Hite, and Chad Mossholder, which compliments the gameplay brilliantly. The multiplayer mode is the only big problem with the game. The multiplayer, unlike the single-player campaign, was not as well thought out and didn’t live up to the hype that it created. The single-player campaign was very well thought out and is the pride and joy of the game.
All-in-all, I have to say that Doom is one of the best games I have ever played and was one of the best games of 2016.
