Lets Wrestle!

BY Jyontae Jordan-Maines

From helmets and spikes to headgear and singlets, the GJHS Wrestling program is finally upon us! Following the football team’s record-breaking season, which saw them capture a consecutive Division 6 championship, the wrestling squad is hungry to impress. Returning to the team includes D1 scholarship-winning Exree Loe, state-placer Austin Barber, and many more. Football breakout star Rushaud Jordan-Maines has also joined the team for his premiere season as a wrestler.

“This season is going to be special,” says Will Harris, head-coach of the Varsity squad. Joining Harris in the coaching staff are BOB wrestling coach Quenteen Robinson and wrestling hall-of-famer, Carlton Haselrig Sr. The town, more than ever, is expecting a renaissance period in Johnstown sports, hoping to replicate the success of the football team. “Our number one priority is making this squad as tough and successful as the football team,” says Haselrig, “Nothing else is more important.”

It seems as if the team is primed to do just that. Following a recent win over Central Cambria, their record currently sits at 1-0. Wins from athletes such as Brock Moore, Deshaun Hamer and Rushaud Jordan-Maines, among others helped to ignite the win.Building off the excitement of the fall season, the community hopes to see the wins continue. Either way, Greater Johnstown School District is sure to produce another exciting year of wrestling!
