It is that time of year again. What time may you be asking? It's time for District Music Contest, otherwise known as DMC.
DMC is a Nebraska state contest where schools come all over and perform selected duets, solos, or ensembles. Mr. Jeff Peabody of Columbus High School has had the opportunity to host DMC this year, and the experience has been quite intensive.
“To be honest it's been a bit overwhelming. Hosting includes creating the schedule, organizing the facilities, ensuring all necessary equipment is available, and accommodating each of the attending schools. It has taken many hours of work to prepare to host the event, but in the end, I believe it is worth it to our musicians to have this special opportunity.”
DMC is Friday, April 21 at Columbus High School. It starts at 8 a.m and concludes around 7 p.m. Whether it's a choir or band class, DMC is a big opportunity for all high school students in performing arts.
For Columbus High School, DMC is a part of the leadership application process for the Marching Band. In the Marching band, there are many leadership positions. There are section leaders, drum majors, and Cadet drum majors. When going out for a Drum Major position, you are required to perform a solo of your choice, and when going out for a section leader position you are given the choice to perform a duet or small ensemble.
While DMC might be a fun time it also comes with many challenges. Sophomore clarinet player Josie L. Davlin said, “A huge challenge I had to overcome was trying to keep my grades up and focus really hard on counting beats in a measure.” Sophomore baritone player Jacque Sanchez said, “I had to overcome the fear of messing up and just performing an instrumental solo in front of a crowd.”
DMC is a wonderful opportunity for all students in performing arts. So come join Columbus High School in hosting DMC 2023.
