When the weather gets nice, everything begins to undergo change; suddenly everyone and everything looks different. As for beloved CHS, you can expect a few changes. For those of you who have dreamed about swimming to class, dream no longer.
This summer, Columbus Public Schools will begin work on the Columbus Discoverer Swimming Pool and Nautical Education Center on the existing high school’s third floor.
The center will include an Olympic sized swimming pool and diving area as well as a 1400 seat lecture hall for flag-signaling and nautical knot-tying lessons. With this investment in the new facility, homeroom will instead be used for daily, school-wide lessons that will, without a doubt, assist the student body in the ever-changing landscape of both swimming and sailing.
While the pool is exciting enough news, it’s really just the beginning. Within the decade, CHS hopes that all the swimming and boating lessons will translate into flooding the athletic fields north of the school and adding the Bret Thompson Sailing Academy.
“This pool is a phenomenal investment for Columbus and for the entire community,” Thompson added. “This pool will blow the middle school’s third floor swimming pool completely out of the water…pun intended. Always remember, wherever you go, there you are!”
Psychology teacher Ethan Lichtenfeld is excited about his new Water-Exposure Therapy classes.
“Essentially, I will push anybody afraid of water into the deep end of the pool,” said Lichtenfeld. “Do it enough times, they’ll either drown or get over their fear of water! What more could we ask for?”
You heard it here first folks; you can expect to come back to school in the fall with a brand new and relevant pastime. If you have any questions, you can call the Aquatic and Nautical Center hotline at 402-APRIL-FOOLS.
