Columbus High Band Concert

The first band concert of the semester is tonight, Tuesday, February 28. Performances will feature the 2nd-semester Concert Band and the Jazz Band. If you're looking for a fun night to jamm along with some music then look no further!

The Concert Band is playing four songs. “We Meet Again” by Samuel Hazo, “Clouds” by Anne McGinty, “Adrenaline Engines” by Randall Standridge, and “Mar Y Cielo” by Jorge L. Vargas.

“We Meet Again" is the concert opener. It is written in the Fanfare style and practices fundamentals of counting and interpreting accidentals.

“Clouds” is a piece that musically describes three types of clouds: Cirrus, Cumulonimbus, and Cumulus. Cirrus clouds are wispy clouds found at high altitudes and can appear with a silky sheen look. Cumulonimbus clouds (sometimes known as thunderclouds) are sinister clouds that tower high into the sky.  These are the only types of clouds capable of producing hail, thunder, and lightning. Cumulus clouds are bright puffy clouds that can resemble many different shapes in the sky.

“Adrenaline Engines” was inspired by bursts of energy that can come from enthusiastic musicians. It also combines some advanced rhythms and key signatures.

Lastly, “Mar Y Cielo” is a Pasodouble and is briskly paced. The name translates to “Sea and Sky” and is a fun, lively jamm..

The Jazz band will feature four selections: “Bad Dog!” By Mike Dana, “Autumn Afternoons” by Larry Neeck, “Una Mas” by Kenny Dorham arranged by Paul Murtha, and “Things Ain't What they Used to Be” by Mercer Ellington arranged by Rich Sigler.

“Bad Dog!” this piece is a swinging shuffle that features incredible harmonies from all sections. This piece is an effective opener, closer, or anything in between.

“Autumn Afternoons” is an innovative original that features stunning solos. Plan on hearing some amazing alto sax and trumpet from the band during this number.

“Una Mas” This piece has a funk/Latin style and has stable scoring and an easygoing solo section. It is adjusted for jazz ensembles and will relate to audiences today.

“Things Ain't What they Used to Be” this swing shuffle has a familiar and catchy melody that flows smoothly from section to section. It also has composed solos for young soloists aspiring to be better.

The bands have been putting in much hard work and time to perfect the music. With the direction of Jeffery Peabody the band invites you to come and watch their concert tonight at the Columbus High School Auditorium. The show starts at 7:00 p.m. and is totally free of charge.
