Thinking about Spring Sports? Find out how you can join the team!

Girls Tennis: For those interested in trying out for girls’ tennis this year, Coach Leibhart has shared important upcoming dates.

She says practice begins on February 27, and the first match takes place on March 23rd. After tryouts, the team will most likely be decided before March 3rd.

Liebhart adds that tennis is a game that includes short sprints and runs, good hand-eye coordination, and proper form. The team focuses on all these aspects in the beginning so that in the end, they can all learn to play a successful game.

Each practice, the team starts off with stretches and then proceeds to practice conditioning, serving, and responding back. The requirements for being able to play this year are to have your physical form and paperwork turned in, your own racket, and preferably appropriate workout attire.

For those who are thinking about joining, Coach Leibhart recommends getting some practice out on the court as the temperatures rise, and watching some tennis games in your free time.

Boys Soccer: For all the boys interested in giving soccer a go this year, Coach Arlt has shared information about the outlook for this season.

He says that the schedule for soccer is a bit difficult due to most of the games being against HAC schools. However, this responsibility does not discourage most players. There are estimated to be about 80 boys trying out for soccer this year.

Arlt says their goals for this season are to make the State Tournament and win the HAC Tournament. Throughout the season the team typically spends time each day working on fundamentals, communications, and conditioning.

Requirements to be eligible to play this season include having your physical form and paperwork turned in, and being academically responsible with your grades.

For those who are thinking about joining, tryouts begin on February 27, Coach Arlt recommends you bring a “ready to give it your all” attitude!

Girls Soccer: If you are looking to play soccer, Coach Wayman has a few items that should help make the most of your try-out!

Athletes should have played the game before and possess a general understanding of the game, a tremendous work ethic, desire to do their best, a competitive spirit and a “better everyday” attitude.

Competitions against Norfolk, Fremont and other rivals tend to be among the team’s favorite events. To take part in these contests, all athletes looking to try out must have a signed physical, signed parent permission form, emergency information filled out online and have a C-Stamp.

For anyone who is on the fence about trying out, Coach Wayman wants to say that trying out does not guarantee a spot on the team, but rather an experience whereby you may learn qualities for success.

Boys Golf: For all the boys who are thinking about joining the golf team this year, Coach Robertson has shared information regarding the enticing season that is coming up. She encourages all who are interested to reach out to her with any questions regarding this upcoming season.

To get an idea of the golf schedule, Coach Robertson likes to compare the schedule to “The Fast and the Furious,” because once the season begins, the team is out once or twice a week from school, all day, competing.

In terms of preparation, she recommends having basic golf swing skills and experience playing rounds of golf. Throughout the season practice varies depending on the weather, they usually work through practice stations (putting, chipping, range) or on the course playing tee to green.

Coach Robertson says that they are focusing on 3 things this year, patience, persistence, and perseverance. Requirements to join are to have your physical form and paperwork turned in. Again, it is recommended to have some experience, as well as basic golf knowledge.

Tryouts take place on February 27- March 3rd for all those who are willing to give golf a try!

Baseball: To be a part of the C-Town Nine, get ready for lots of time in the dirt and grass preparing for a successful season.

Athletes should have some prior training and baseball specific skills such as hitting, fielding, baserunning, pitching and catching. Players should also have basic knowledge of the game’s rules.

If you want to be on the CHS Baseball team, you have to expect to be competitive each day at practice, a high standard of representing the program in a positive way and a burning desire to answer, “How can I help my team today?”.

Rivalry games include a Maroon Cup contest against Norfolk and an F and C Cup game against Fremont. The team plays in the HAC Tournament in Lincoln during April and concludes the season districts. However, if the team wins districts, they move on to the State Tournament in Omaha.

Coach Johnson wants the team to be a “family” and wants to tell people on the fence that they’ll never know unless they try; whether they make the team or not, they won’t worry about the regret of not knowing what could have been.

Track and Field: Are you ready for the purest athletic contest in the world of sports? Well, Track and Field are for you!

Athletes should be involved in weight training and conditioning, have a love for running and a propensity for work hard. Every single day, athletes are expected to be dedicated and represent themselves in the highest manner in and out of school.

The biggest events that track and field participate in are the CHS Invite, HAC Conference Invite and Districts.

Coach Bethune, CHS’s boys track coach,  would like all athletes to work hard in the sport, keep grades up and build good relationships. If you love to run, lift weights, you work hard and compete, track and field is the place for you.

If you are interested in running, participating in team events and working out and are a girl, Girls Track might be for you. Every event is different, so it requires its own training and skills, such as throwing, sprints and distance running.

Athletes should know and expect that track is fun, but challenging. Each athlete can set specific goals and measure themselves against those goals. The biggest meets are suring the last 2 weeks of the season in May, being the Conference meet and District meet.

For anyone on the fence of trying out, Coach Bills wants you to know that it sets you up for other sports, trains you to overcome mentally challenging situations and have fun as well.

In addition to boys and girls track, the Unified team is looking for more members. Coach Wildman says the schedule for Unified Track and Field is essentially the same as the JV/ Varsity Track & Field Schedule. She says most JV/Varsity Track and field events host a Unified Division at the beginning of a meet.

Throughout the season the team focuses on building skills and endurance as they train. The Unified Track team only practices on Mondays and Tuesdays, they begin with a warm-up and then proceed with that day's scheduled training. Mondays are focused on building long jump and shot put skills, while Tuesdays are focused on running exercises and building endurance.

Coach Wildman says the goals for this year are for the athletes to gain new athletic skills and build friendships along the way.

If athletes or partners are interested in joining, the first practice is Monday, March 6 at 4 pm. We will have a meet and greet with everyone interested and a short introduction to each event that the athletes will compete in.
