Need an update on Columbus Wrestling? I am happy to announce that we have some exciting news concerning Districts and State for the Columbus Wrestling team this year!
On February 3-4, juniors Marissa Anderson, Hailey Hahn, EllaMay Shevlin, Danica Taylor, and sophomore Diana Orozco competed for a spot at the state tournament. Although all of the girls put their best foot forward, only Anderson qualified for state. Hailey Hahn and EllaMay Shevlin were mere points away from qualifying but were just out of reach.
Despite Taylor's wrestling season bring thrown off due to injury and surgery, being points away from qualifying for state was a big accomplishment for the junior.
After barely missing a state qualification last season, Anderson fought all season long for the trip that eluded her in 2022. Anderson explained, "It feels amazing to be finally a state qualifier - even if I do poorly at state."
A week later, the boys' wrestling team stepped up at districts with one thing on their minds: State.
Our boys did phenomenally, both as individuals and overall. Caydn Kuchera and Liam Blaser hit their 100-win match record this weekend. Adrian Bice, Kaden Brownlow, Brenyn Delano, Caydn Kuchera and Mason Peterson all took a District Championship.
Four wrestlers, Marcus Beltran, Liam Blaser, Levi Cerny, and Jaeston Delano placed third in districts, and will continue to represent our school at the state tournament. Finally, Carter Fedde and Bryson Huey placed fourth at districts, thereby qualifying for state.
Columbus takes its show on the road to the state tournament in Omaha at the CHI Health Center. State will be a three-day tournament taking place from Thursday, February 16 through Saturday, February 18. You can watch these qualifiers compete at state online at https://nsaahome.org/wrestling/.
Overall, both the girls and boys competed with an intense fire, representing Columbus High at its best. The community is looking forward to watching state this year and seeing just how far these athletes can go.
