She Said/ She Said - Singles or Couples?

Couples

Valentine’s Day is a very special day full of surprises, love and romance. You just can’t expect to enjoy February 14 unless you have a special someone with whom to share it; it just simply isn’t the same. In fact, single people should be rounded up, forced into a room and partnered off, if only for their happiness on that one day. Ok, just kidding, but in all seriousness, Valentine’s Day is much better spent with your significant other than it is alone.

The literal definition of Valentine’s Day is where couples and spouses express their love and affection with greetings and gifts. It’s not the same as getting a box of chocolates from your mom or grandma when you’re supposed to be getting them from the “love of your life.” You should be treated that day with many different surprises including flowers, notes, chocolates or even a surprise date. Just imagine walking into school to find your significant other brought you your favorite coffee and a donut as opposed to walking into school and realizing that you’re yet again, alone on the day of love.

There are so many things that you can do on Valentine’s day that involve a significant other. Couples can go out and enjoy little picnic dates, go to museums, a show, concert, fancy dinner, walk around downtown, go to shops and so much more. No matter what event you could plan for a Singles Awareness Day, when it comes right down to it, events for couples are far more enjoyable.  How is a “Self-Care Date” going to stack up to enjoying a night on the town, holding hands with your favorite person? How are your family and friends (some of whom may be coupled and have other engagements, by the way) going to fill that psychological need for romance? There simply isn’t a scenario where spending the culmination to the first fortnight of February without a significant other is better than spending it with one.

To sum it up, Valentine’s day is a day for couples. It does not involve being alone and trying to treat yourself for the day. You need someone special in your life in order to enjoy February 14, so go out and find someone.

Singles

It's that time again, folks - the time when love and googly eyes are in the air. Well, I am here to squash the notion that Valentine's Day is ONLY for couples. That is false; Valentine's Day is for everyone, especially the singles. In fact, it is immensely BETTER to be single on Valentine's Day.

Even though having a significant other on the holiday of love is nice,  there is something arguably better than date nights - a night with the girls, duh! Spending the night with friends is a far superior way to spend Valentine's. Furthermore, a night dedicated to the girls is more meaningful than a date could ever be. The girls will still be there when your significant other is not so significant anymore.

Another great way to spend Valentine's is by spending time with family. There is nothing better than having the family come over and watch rom-coms while stuffing your faces with pizza and popcorn and whatever other foods and snacks you desire. There is no need for you to worry about absurd things like how beautiful you need to look for your date tonight or how sweet your partner is for getting you those flowers that will die in a week (if you're lucky). Need I remind you - blood is thicker than the water you'll use to buy those flowers an extra day before sending them off to a landfill.

Next up on the list is self-love Day. Self-love day includes none of that sappy, squishy squabbling about how love is in the air because it isn't. The only love in the air is the lingering scent from the bath and body works bath bombs and lotions from the perfect at-home spa day. You can take yourself out for dinner, buy whatever you want and not worry about what some stranger you probably met on a dating app thinks of you.

Let me talk about the importance of the "holiday" for a minute. First off, if it was such a momentous occasion, wouldn't we have school and work off? You know, to spend time with our significant other? Second off, If it wasn't marked on those little calendars that you get at the beginning of the year, I'm willing to bet that 80% of the couples wouldn't even celebrate this day. Valentine's Day is only as special as you make it; for some people, it is just like any other day.

So what makes the idea of Valentine's so special? Is it the idea of showing love? No, you should show love every day. Is it the idea that you give and get presents? No, there are birthdays for that. It's the idea that you need someone to be there for you, when, in all reality, it's far more enriching to know you can rely solely on yourself.

All in all, Valentine's Day is more for the singles. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on couples, I'm simply saying that couples don't need a specific day to show their love when they do it regularly. So all of my single ladies (and guys) out there, this day is yours.
