This year's wrestling season is off to a great start! Coach Adam Keiswetter says “practices have been very good” and sees improvements happening all over the mats.
There are many new wrestlers, but with the help of team veterans, Keiswetter claims, “Practices has been very intense.”
As one of those wrestlers, I can agree. I see many of the boys coming out of the wrestling room with darker-colored shirts and sweat dripping down their faces. Many of the girls’ hairdos have been redone and messed up many times.
Keiswsetter says “Bennington will be a fun event”. Girls and boys wrestled at this invite and the wrestlers had opponents that we do not normally see like Class B State Champs Bennington and Class C State Champs David City Aquinas. There was a unique format because both girls and boys are wrestling.
14 of our 16 wrestlers medaled at Bennington. As a team, Columbus places 3rd, just behind the Class B state champs Bennington, and Class C state champ Aquinas. We had 3 champions in Liam Blaser, Kasen Grape and Ella May Shevlin, with Blaser taking his second crown at the event. Mason Petersen finished as a runner up and we had 4 3rd placers: Levi Cerny, Eric Slusarski, Adrian Bice, and Marcus Beltran. 4th placers were: Jaeston Delano, Diana Orozco, Cody Cuba, Carter Fedde, Cooper Buxton and Anchor News’ fiercest wrestler.
On December 9, the JV and Girls went to North East Lincoln High while varsity went to Bellevue West. Varsity ended up winning the tournament. Breynyn Delano, Cadyn Kuchera, and Adrian bice got first in their weight classes. Cater Fedde, Beltran and Blaser placed second. Third place winners included Jaeston Delano, Levi Cerny, Mason Peterson, and both Kasen and Kysen Grape. Marissa Anderson placed 1st and Ella Chevlin placed 3rd
In conclusion, the boys will be going to Grand Island for a 2-day tournament called Fracas on the 16th and the 17th of December. The next event for the girls will be the Skutt dual on the 20th of December.
