Coach Shaefer and Coach Bills have set a goal for the girls basketball team this year.
“Last year we set goals to do well against the outstate competition like schools from Norfolk and Grand Island and we hope to try and grab a few wins in the metro area and we’re just trying to build from that this year.”
Despite a handful of girls being out with injuries, coach Scott Shaefer thinks he has a competitive group of girls ready to turn some heads over the course of the long season.
When asked how practices have been going so far, Shaefer said, “They’re going very well, I think they could be a little more vocal and enthusiastic but they’re kind of inching toward that direction.”
Starting the season on the road has its pluses and minuses for the girls. The pressure from a home crowd is notably absent from road contests, but Shaefer and the team still love having the band playing and their own student section cheering them on. Shaefer affirmed having our school’s fans at the games, “makes it more exciting for the players. It makes the girls play harder.”
A few weeks ago, the team had a scrimmage against Beatrice, which acted as a regular game, though it didn’t count for one. It was still officiated and scored, just not counted for either school’s record.
Their first official game against Bellevue West, a Class A school, was on December 1. They ended up suffering a loss with a score of 65-36.
The team's second game, against Grand Island, was definitely an enjoyable one. They beat Grand Island 47-30. Their game at Lincoln East was a devastating one for the group. They endured another tough, 45-25 loss.
The girls’ most recent game, on December 11, was a very satisfactory game for them. They acquired a spectacular win against Buena Vista with a score of 56-11.
Be sure to support the players by coming and watching their upcoming games at Lincoln Northeast on December 16 and against North Platte on December 22.
The team’s first game after Christmas break is a home game on January 6. They will be playing Fremont and the game is to start at 5:30.
