Despite a couple of early-season hiccups, the CHS Boys Basketball team has come through the early-season tests with an even record and tons of experiences to build upon. Connor Martinez, Tanner Esch and Caden Kapels, are leading the boys to the start of a long season. Martinez, Kapels and Griffin Micek are doing a fantastic job as team captains, helping coach Jordan Hitchcock keep the boys excited and ready.
Since this is a young team, their focus has been on improving daily. Considering that basketball is one of the longest seasons of the prep calendar, positive relationships and team chemistry need to drive the team. This means everyone has to contribute during activities, practices and games, not just for a competitive advantage but to make sure things stay fun as well.
Through four games in this young season, the Discoverers have posted a 2-2 mark. The year's first contest against Bellevue West did not go according to plan. The boys had an off day and lost the game to 81-30.
However, the Discoverers bounced back with a close game against Grand Island and brought home a 59-50 win on their floor. Hitchcock was quick to credit the home crowd for their support.
"The home crowd is huge for this team! The crowd gives the guys energy and gives them the motivation to do better. We are very grateful for all of the fans that come to cheer us on. Every time they hear the crowd cheer, it tells them that their school and community are proud of them and support all of their efforts," says Mr. Hitchcock.
The other two games added a win and a loss onto the board. The home game against Lincoln East had a final score of 73-31 and the home game against Buena Vista tallied a win with a score of 64-19.
All in all, this season's early 2-2 mark is a positive sign. The team is playing hard, and fan support makes them play even harder. There will be many games ahead, and it would be a shame to miss such an invigorating team dribbling their way through what is bound to be a great season.
