The CHS Mock Trial Team has been up to some exciting events this season far with a great start! The team consists of 14 students and is basically a rookie team along with a new head coach Mr. Alex Hollister, but Hollister says they have been doing some hard work that has been paying off.
So far, the team has had a total of 5 trials this season at their Veteran’s Day weekend competition. Though the team did not qualify for the Nebraska State Bar Association’s state championship, they gained the eye of a public defender who offered to coach them next season. They were very grateful for the opportunity and snatched it up since they were the only team at competitions without an attorney coach.
Trial member Taryn Wiegand is in her first year participating in Mock Trial, and, so far, she is enjoying it very much. She said the thing she enjoys the most is the fact that there is a lot of variety in the types of trials and it never gets boring. She hopes next year will result in a more successful year with their new attorney coach. After being asked how their competition went, Taryn says that they did really well considering that it is all their first year on the team.
After being asked to describe how the season is going, Hollister explained “My hopes for the kids involved for this year, I told them, were to learn and to have fun. Mock Trial is as much of a learning opportunity as it is a competitive activity. There are many aspects of law that students are unfamiliar with when they go into Mock Trial and the process of participating in it is to learn and to grow in their knowledge of this. This experience is particularly important for students who are looking into possible careers in criminal justice, law enforcement, or other career paths along those lines.” The team has a lot of potential, and the students have fun doing it.
The CHS Mock Trial is a good activity to get involved in if you plan on going to work in the justice system when you’re older! You’ll get a lot of practice and an idea of what a real trial would look like! The next sign ups for the CHS Mock Trial are in the spring of 2023.
