Dead People You Should Know: Ed and Lorraine Warren
Olivya Thege
The Ghostbusters have nothing on this couple. Whether or not you have binged watched "The Conjuring" series, I recommend getting your popcorn ready and watching them. As "Conjuring" fanatics know, Ed and Lorraine Warren are the main characters who hunt ghosts and investigate paranormal activity. But did you know this series is based on real people? Prepare to have your minds blown as Anchor News explores these dead people you should know!
Ed Warren was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on September 7, 1926. While Ed was growing up, he noticed his childhood home was less than normal...PARANORMAL, if you will. Ed believed he lived in a house with plenty of dark and haunted history. The feelings and memories lived in his head as he got older and developed into a love for ghost investigating.
Ed's future wife, Lorraine Warren, was also born in Bridgeport on January 31, 1927. Lorraine found interest in the occult when she was around nine. She remembered seeing auras around people as a child but assumed this was normal.
Ed and Lorraine met in 1944 when Ed worked as an usher at their local movie theater. The movie theater was a regular place for Lorraine and her mother, so she got to know Ed a little more. After Ed enlisted in the Navy, he and Lorraine officially began dating.
During his service, a 30-day tour nearly cost Ed his life as his ship sank in the North Atlantic. Luckily, Ed avoided the catastrophe of titanic proportion (pun intended). After Ed's near-death experience, the couple happily married on January 11, 1945, and were inseparable. Precisely a year after getting married, Ed and Lorraine had their first child, Judy.
Eventually, Lorraine, the strange visions of her childhood led Lorraine to a belief in ghosts. She began to believe it more when she and Ed would visit and paint haunted houses. Subsequently, Ed and Lorraine came to a realization that these paranormal mysteries required investigation, and a ghost-hunting career began.
In 1952, Ed and Lorraine founded the New England Society for Psychic Research, the oldest hunting group in the region. This encouraged the couple to write many books about their paranormal experiences and investigations. That said, the Warrens investigated well over 10,000 cases during their career. As a result, many people became intrigued by the couple's work. This eventually led to the beginning of documentaries, tv shows, and movie series such as the "Amityville House" and "The Conjuring Universe."
As we know, the famous and well-known paranormal doll, Annabelle, was actually the Warren's first notable investigation and the catalyst for the doll's popularity. Other cases they have been a part of are Perron Family, Amityville, Enfield poltergeist, Arne Johnson, Snedeker House, Smurl Family, and Union Cemetary. Due to the number of paranormal experiences and investigating, Ed and Lorraine trained several demonologists, including Dave Considine and their nephew, John Zaffis.
Ed died on August 23, 2006, and Lorraine died 13 years later, on April 18, 2019. Do not worry, though. They are still talked about today; "Nun 2" is in production, and "The Conjuring 4" comes out in 2024.
Whether or not you think this couple had an interesting or successful lifestyle, they are an unbelievable duo. To this day, the couple is known for their incredible career and work. The Conjuring Universe has also won a few awards. In 2014, the Conjuring Universe won the Empire Award for Best Horror, Critics' Choice Movie Award, and Bandung Film Festival Award. Now, if you have not already done so, GO WATCH IT!
