Revolution is a group of 50 high school students across Columbus united to help mentor those affected by dating violence and sexual assault.
Center for Survivors, which sponsors Revolution, found that individuals are more likely to talk to people their own age about similarly sensitive topics. Taylor Amsler, an adult leader of the group, explains, “we teach them how to respond to crisis when a friend approaches them about their abusive relationship or a sexual assault that has occurred so that the Rev member can then guide their friend to someone who can help”.
Revolution participates in many events throughout the year, but they are mostly known for their theatrical presentations. The real-life experiences of Revolutions members, their families and their friends drive the plot of these dramatizations. These scenarios lend to the realism of each performance, but they also serve as a reminder that the realities of dating violence and sexual assault are not unique to TV and movies. By dramatizing these events and appropriate responses to them, Revolution has helped countless teens across the state recognize problematic relationships and find healthy ways to get help. The club meets and performs through December and will resume its presentations again in the spring.
Members also engage in activities with children at community events, classroom presentations at schools, walking in parades, and, most of all, spreading awareness. Members spread domestic violence awareness during October, decorating the school with posters and purple ribbons. Next February, Revolution will similarly spread awareness for Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month by wearing orange, including an “Orange 4 love” day on the 14.
Recruitment starts in March of each year if anyone is interested in being a Revolution member. Applications can be found and filled out at their website: centerforsurvivors.org/revolution. Revolution members can be reached by phone at the Center for Survivors at (402) 564-2155. They also have Facebook and Instagram pages on the handle @revolution.cfs.
