Chocolate Candy by Addison Davis
As it gets colder outside, it means Halloween is coming around! Needless to say, the holiday highlight for youngsters is galavanting around the neighborhood in costume, soliciting candy from their neighbors. Regardless of how the night was spent, it always ends with kids going through their candy and eating too many of their favorites.
Likewise, the November 1 debate on the playgrounds and discount aisles of the nation will follow a similarly familiar refrain: which kind of candy is better - Sweet and Sour candies or chocolate? I firmly believe that chocolate is the superior candy to receive on Halloween.
Chocolate just lends itself to cold weather. Hot chocolate, Christmas candies and chocolate pie are all staples of cold weather holidays. Simply put, sour candy doesn't capture the feel of the Halloween season in the same way chocolate does.
Sweet and sour candy advocates (like my deranged opponent) lean on the fact that these inferior candies have more variety than chocolate. Yeah, I suppose they're right, but most of these so-called "treats" taste like sour, acidic, bitter grossness that has you rushing for your toothbrush. What these dopes fail to realize is that there are so many flavors of chocolate as well! With the different types of chocolate, there are a lot of choices that are better for you or even healthy. The sweet and sour candies are all high calories junk that makes you sick.
Other geniuses agree with me, too. I took a poll, and a majority of the people chose chocolate. Out of 15 people, 10 chose chocolate and 5 chose sour. You might say, "well that's not very many people," but, as the great philosopher Meat Loaf once said, "Two outta three ain't bad." That just proves my point that chocolate is better than the other stuff. You can't even enjoy overly sweet or sour candy. It makes your face smush up the whole time your eating it. Overall, I think chocolate is definitely the best candy to be passed out on Halloween for all to enjoy.

Spooky season means spooky treats. Only the best treats can be enjoyed during this time. What treat could this be? Candy, of course! Not just any candy, though. Only sweet, sour, and tart candies truly represent this eerie time of year - none of that chocolatey goop. I'm here to tell you why sweet and sour candies deserve the Halloween candy crown.
First of all, while chocolate can be good, too much of it leaves your mouth with a gross and bitter taste. Chocolate can be gooey, gross, and, even though there are several variations and flavors, they all have the same overpowering texture. On the other hand, sweet and sour candies don't overpower; they're tasty, simple treats that don't make you reach for a toothbrush afterward.
Sweet and sour candies are also far more distributable. Chocolate allergies make sharing too difficult to give others. Nobody is allergic to a Sour Patch Kid or Jolly Rancher.
Second, who wants to have melted candy in their Halloween basket? Chocolate melts too quickly, and it can be hard to find a fresh piece of candy to eat. Halloween day can be the hottest of the month or even the coldest in this weird Nebraska weather. This means your once gooey Snickers bar can be frozen solid and hard to eat. Hard sweet and sour candies and gummies will hold their form until the rapture. Why risk ruining a kid's Halloween basket with not only inferior candy, but candy that will melt in their hands before it ever reaches their mouths?
Lastly, chocolate is way too expensive. A Statista study claims that in 2019, the average price of one unit of chocolate was $2.27, while other candies were only $1.88. I don't know about you, but those prices add up quickly. For teenagers who don't make much money but live for sugar, like me, it's best to go for the lower prices, especially when you're getting better candy.
Overall, no matter how you feel about Halloween, candy, or the season as a whole, a piece of candy is a perfect indulgence. So avoid being tricked into choosing inferior chocolate candies when choosing your treat. Sweet and sour is totally the way to go this Halloween.
